Moriyasu urges Japan not to ride 'roller-coaster'

Japan's new trade minister has urged the country not to "ride the roller-coaster" of global trade tensions, as he met his US and South Korean counterparts for the first time. Hiroshi Moriyasu said Japan would work with its neighbours to ensure stability in the supply of goods and materials. 

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China over trade. Mr Moriyasu also said he would seek talks with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer when he visits Washington later this month.

New Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu has called on his players not to ride the "roller-coaster" of emotions during their World Cup campaign.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Japan's opening game against Russia on Friday, Moriyasu said: "I don't want the players to get too high or too low.

Moriyasu also spoke about the importance of getting off to a good start in the tournament, saying: "If we can win our first game, it will give us a big boost."

Japan are looking to bounce back from a disappointing showing at the 2018 World Cup, where they failed to make it out of the group stage.

What led to this statement?

In an interview with Kyodo News on Tuesday, Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu said that he would like to see his team play with more "consistency" and not get caught up in the highs and lows of the game.

We have ups and downs like a roller coaster, but I want us to be even keel and not get too high or too low."

Moriyasu's comments come after Japan's 2-1 loss to South Korea in the East Asian Cup final on Saturday. The defeat marked Japan's first loss under Moriyasu, who took over as head coach in May.
